Nguyen Thi Huyen Mi (B.A in English Language Teacher Education)
About Me
My name is Nguyen Thi Huyen Mi. I am currently a freelance ESL Teacher at M.I.P.
Ever since I was a teenager, learning languages has always been my passion, from English as my major subject at High School to English Language Teacher Education as my field at University. It is that passion driving me forward who I am today - a junior teacher who aspires to offer inventive English lessons for students, not only through the knowledge but also through my class delivery, with the help of technology.
Thank you a lot for being here and exploring my life story.

Learning and Improving
University Of Languages and International Studies (ULIS), Vietnam National University (VNU)
Aug 2017 - Jun 2021
Major: English Language Teacher Education
GPA: 3.75/4.0
Top 6 Graduates of the Faculty
Class secretary (2017-2020)
Entering the university, I was welcomed by supportive seniors and considerate lecturers. Throughout my days here, I was given opportunities to enhance my English skills as the first two years were devoted to them. Then in the next 2 years, my curriculum mainly focused on teaching-related modules, in which I learnt about essential skills including researching, teaching methods, curriculum design, material development or assessment. However, things I loved the most being a student here are the soft skills. Had it not been for ULIS, I would not have acquired myself the confidence to present, to think critically, to work flexibly in teams or individual, to adopt new methods of teaching, and on top of that, to reflect on my achievements and limitations.
Tran Phu High School for the Gifted, Hai Phong, Vietnam
Aug 2014 - May 2017
Major subject: English
GPA: 9.1/10.0
Class secretary (2016-2017)
Despite being the most competitive subject at that time (only 70 chosen out of about 1100 students), I successfully got into this class at the 10th place. Since Vietnamese education system was exam-oriented to some extent, I dedicated most of my time not to actually learning English, but to taking myriad practice tests, going to class from 7 to 9 and waking up early to revise the lessons. However, it is undeniable that these theoretical knowledge had provided me with a solid foundation, preparing me for the university and future career.
Professional Experience
Background and Progress
ESL Teacher / Part-time Content Creator | M.I.P
Jun 2021 - Present
An independent teacher
A few months before my graduation, four of my classmates and I launched a project named M.I.P, in which we aimed to provide students with online high-quality programmes teaching grammars, and 1-1 oral tests via Zoom for free. Though this project lasted 3 months, it attracted citywide attention, with the participation of nearly 500 students and a private groups of nearly 400 ones. Then, we decided to take this project seriously, turning it into a small business, recruiting students aged from 10 to 15 for offline classes. Nowadays, despite the available traditional classes, knowledge and tests are still shared and conducted online on our Facebook Page to reach more students and parents.
At present, we are currently working on another project named Pack For Tests, including 3 series "Break Grammar Rules", "Vocabulary Inside Out" and "Eat The Tests" - preparing students with knowledge for the upcoming entrance exam to High School (both basic and advanced).
Regarding offline classes that I am in charge of, I have to manage everything by myself. All handouts should demonstrate my teaching features like our teams' logo or teachers' name. I use the same font, size, or format for every handout. However, the hardest part must be about planning the syllabus. As topics and exercises must be chosen based on students' level, I must spend lots of time analysing reference books, planning the lessons logically and looking for appropriate materials. Then tests are designed and administered monthly for me to keep track of students' progress as well as re-evaluate my teaching method and make changes if needed.
Afterwards, I will contact the parents directly to report students' performance. For some weaker students, not only do I have to report clearly, but I also discuss with parents about the best solution to help their children study better.
I also work part-time as a content creator, in which I have to meet up with colleagues to plan the schedules for Facebook Posts. All of my assigned content is developed and designed by myself.
ESL Teacher | THE BOOK GARDEN
Aug 2019 - May 2021
An apprentice
My position was upgraded when I became a part-time ESL Teacher at an English Center near my university. Here, I was required to teach students from 15 to around 20 years old. This position also came with increased responsibilities, in which I had to design my own syllabus based on the provided topics. This period marked the time when I started to integrate technology into all the lessons. Slides were utilised to present the grammar, videos to learn vocabulary, and online games to revise the knowledge. As students were classified by their levels, I needed to continuously test students and report their progress to the managers.
Two years teaching here became such an unforgettable memory for me as I was able to work in such a friendly environment, where my managers would organise monthly meetings for all the teachers to share about their teaching experience and learn from each other. Furthermore, it allowed me to bear the responsibility of a real teacher, giving me precious hands-on experience.
Teaching Assistant | APOLLO ENGLISH 360
Aug 2018 - Mar 2019
An assistant
When I was about to start Year 2 of University, I applied for this job. Being the only applicant at that time scoring 10 out of 10 in the grammar test, I was offered this position and started my work just one week after. During the time working here, my duty included providing grammar tutor classes for students aged 17 and above. All of them were struggling with English, which made them unable to follow their foreign teachers in the main classes. Therefore, I would help them to fill that gap, most of the time by teaching the knowledge again in our mother tongue and using handouts available online for practice exercises. I did not use much technology-related tools at the time, only when I had foreign students, but that did give me a fresh start.

Skills
Professional Competencies
Critical Thinking
Before courses, I have to seriously consider students' goals and be fully aware of parents' expectations to ensure the programmes are suitable and assist students in reaping the best results
Research
After deciding on the lesson plan and course objectives, time must be spent on selecting and evaluating different material sources before putting them together.
Just like research, each English course is my topic while students are intended audiences.
Organisational
With up to 15 students in each class, I must try to optimise the teaching time to help students both recall and learn something new. Due dates are reminded constantly to prevent students from forgetting to completing the homework.
Communication
I need to develop communication with students, like remembering their names, knowing their interests, giving praises and feedbacks, and being aware of their in-class behaviours.
With parents, I have to engage in constant communication to keep them informed of students' progress while willing to receive critiques or defends from parents.
Teamwork
Our team frequently has meetings to come up with curriculums, classroom practices as well as reflect on the teaching process. Input from others is always welcomed and considered.
Computer
It is vital for me to acquire basic Microsoft Office skills including Words, Excel and Powerpoints.
Some assignments at university also allowed me to realise my abilities to design. So far, I have created teaching slides, my internship slides, photos for marketing on Facebook.
Awards and Honours
1. Excellent Student of the University (2017-2021)
Among all students of the Faculty, I was given the title "Excellent Student" by the University in all 4 continuous years studying here. It should be highlighted that in the first year, there were only two students achieving this title.
2. Second Prize - Student Scientific Research Conference organised by ULIS, VNU (2019-2020)
I started to conduct studies during second year in one module named "Introduction to Research Methodology". Though its aim was just to introduce the students to the world of research, my classes decided to form teams to carry out real studies, in which we had to perform every tasks including writing papers, distributing questionnaires and analysing the data.
Luckily, my team achieved the second prize in the research contest. I continued to work with them on another topic in my third years, and ended my university years with another paper, which was my graduation one.
Here are the topics of all the studies I conducted with my classmates or individually:
2019: Challenges in promoting learner autonomy, as perceived by teachers
2020: The Effects of First Language and Second Language Glosses on Learners’ Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Retention
2021: Lecturers' use of techniques in enhancing undergraduate students' engagement in online EFL classes.
